THE movement of radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr today called for a
nationwide anti-US march on April 9, the fifth anniversary of the toppling
of Saddam Hussein's regime.
A statement issued by his office in the central holy city of Najaf said all
Iraqis, "Sunnis, Shi'ites, Kurds and Arabs, must express their rejection and
raise their voice against the tyrant occupier" in a protest there on April
9.

"Express your rejection by participating in this demonstration. Carry Iraqi
flags that show the unity of Iraq. Do not ignore this protest as it is for
the glory of Islam and victory of the grieving Iraqi people," the statement
said.

Sadr is Iraq's hardline Shi'ite cleric who launched two fierce rebellions in
2004 from Najaf against the American military before entering the political
process.

Last week men from his Mahdi Army militia engaged in fierce battles with
Iraqi security forces in the southern city of Basra and Baghdad after Prime
Minister Nuri al-Maliki launched a crackdown on Shi'ite militants in Basra.

The firefights ended after Sadr told his fighters to withdraw.

On April 9, 2007, Sadr's group held similar anti-US protests across Iraq
