On the specific point raised by Haines I thinl Nestor is historically wrong.

In my experience (and I was in the Army, mostly in Italy, 1944-1947 there
was nothing by admiration for the Soviet Union in Britain until several
years after the war. The situation referred to by Nestor, it seems to me
gradually developed in the period 1948-56, though it was clear to me (from
statements made by some of the lecturers at Sandhurst where I had my officer
training) was already in 1944 that the Soviet Union would become the main
enemy as soon as Hitler was finished !!
