Today, as a part of his Middle East tour, US vice-president Cheney is visiting Turkey. Cheney’s last visit to Turkey was before the occupation of Iraq. This time he demands Turkey to send its military forces to Afganistan where new intensive armed conflicts are taking place. Cheney will held meetings with president Abdullah Gul, prime minister Recep Tayip Erdogan and chief of general staff Yasar Buyukanit. A few weeks ago, during the Northern Iraq operation of Turkey US Defence Secretary had interviews with the same trio. Turkish army had ended the operation after these meetings.
Cheney’s visit is being protested by some anti-emperialist organisations. Those organisations accept Cheney as the “shadow president of US” and they know that he is not the man of picayune business.
It is not forgoten that in 1950’s the Turkish government send soldiers to Korea as a part of the cooperation with NATO and USA against communism. Although the Turks are usually –and easily- provoked against communism they believe that Turkish soldiers died for the interest of US in Korea.
Being a mean for US interests, this time in Middle East, is still one of the main topics of the discussions in Turkey. Considering the Great Middle East Project of US, the argument is really a hot issue. Every single case or discussion is being related to this issue. The Kurdish problem, debates on democracy, the policies of the power Party –AKP (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi/ Justice and Development Party)-, last police operation against so-called ultra-nationalist and militarist criminal organisation which is settled in the crucial positions of the state organs and also in civil society and etc. are all related with Great Middle East Project. Thus the Cheney’s visit can be viewed as another step on the way.
