Joaquin has written a long and very eloquent post disagreeing with my
position on Obama. I will think over what he has written with regard to the
centrality of the race question within the US politic.

But here I would by way of apologia pro vita mea, try and work out why I
have disliked Obama so much. I can only think it is an Irish thing. I
truly suspect that Obama is at heart very much a liberal open even to some
elements of radical discourse. But he has hidden that and sloughed off any
sympathy he may have had with touchstone issues such as that of Palestine.
In terms which an Irish person could identify with he is a "traitor". He
has gone over to the other side. He has sold out. That for the Irish is a
real no-no. Naive perhaps but it is a long term part of the Irish psyche to
hate traitors and informers more than the enemy.

There is also the question of Obama's unending string of platitudes which
frankly would insult the intelligence of a donkey that has had a lobotomy.

By contrast Hilary Clinton is what she is. A true enemy of the people. I
oppose everything she stands for.

Now what I think is my most important point, Obama has acted with some honor
in the Wright case. I say 'with some', because he did describe Wright as an
"uncle who says the wrong things". But for a main stream politician his
refusal to denounce Wright completely was quite remarkable.

So I found myself drawn to Obama. At that moment I knew that his candidacy
was doomed. I may be proved wrong on this. He may get the nomination. I
hope now he does. He may defeat McCain. Again I hope he does. But I do
not think so.

regards

Gary
