As the e-mail you replied to said: "A report on the BBC News website
headlined 'Israel warns of Gaza 'holocaust'" noted that in Israel the
word "holocaust" -- shoah in Hebrew -- is "a term rarely used in Israel
outside discussions of the Nazi genocide during World War II.'"

On Wikipedia, it redirects to Holocaust.

The Jerusalem Post said "The Hebrew word shoah, which means "disaster"
or "conflagration," is primarily used in Israel to refer to the Holocaust."

The LA Times said "The Hebrew word shoah, or holocaust, is not used
casually in Israeli society. Occasionally, it is employed to denote a
massive disaster."

The only place I found Anon's point made was this:
"Tom Gross, a media affairs columnist for the conservative National
Review Online, said there was a major difference between 'a shoah' and
'THE shoah.'

"'It is like confusing a 'white house' with 'The White House,'' Gross
wrote."
