[Marxism] William F. Buckley, Jr: "Self-Mutilation"

Buckley died this week. Those of us of a certain age watched him on TV
back in the fifties when he spun high-blown rhetoric in defense of some
of the most backward political positions. Yet he also favored marijuana
decriminalization, opposed the war in Iraq as bad for the United states,
and opposed the blockade on Cuba as a violation of U.S. citizens' rights.

Ultra-reactionary, but against the Cuba blockade. Not a new position for
Buckley, but notice that his arguments underscored the hypocrisy of the
US recognition and trade with China and Vietnam, but at the same time
maintainined its relentless war against the Cuban Revolution. He thought
that the Bush measures against Cuba put the onus on the United States
for limiting the rights of Cubans.

Of course, that's where it's actually been all along, but just like a
stopped clock is correct twice a day, Buckley made the right arguments,
though providing all the wrong motivations...
