I reckon kids should start Jack London with Call of the Wild before going on 
to his more political stuff !!

And don't forget Alice in Wonderland and Gulliver's Travels - both are 
marvellous with witty quotes to remember - and are designed to make you 
think.    They still are (s)MILES better than Tolkien !! (and without that 
reactionary streak !).
