For USers...

and I'd say that with the reclamation of "liberal" by the
neo-liberals, this particular definition makes all the more sense.
I've been reading Uday Singh Mehta's book "Liberalism and Empire" and
it does a lot to illuminate just what this meant in the 19th century,
which is where Friedman, Reagan and Hayek would have liked all Western
civilizations to return. It's just a hop, skip and a jump away from
that to the occupation of Iraq. And it's not just a coincidence that
the two countries that led this charge are a part of that same,
Anglo-American ideological orbit, with Australia close behind.

On this, I was actually a little disappointed in Perry Anderson's
latest editorial in NLR

which puts more of the onus for the occupation on the Israeli lobby.
there's more to the argument he makes, but I can say that, as a
citizen of the US the only argument made to the populous other than
the fear mongering Anderson rightly attributes to 9/11 was of the
Liberal "spreading of freedom" variety. The book looks interesting
and I am sure it won't pull any punches considering Lenin's sparring
on the LBO list.

congrats.
