You're not addressing my point, Eli.  The comparison with antiwar rallies is apples and oranges, but you must know that.

A "progressive liberal base" would be functioning coherently and focusing on one or another of these candidates.

Again, you're missing the point.  

The base that once existed would be more than paper endorsements by officials and leaderships.  The membership would be mobilized and out working to elect a specific, common slate of candidates.

Perhaps, this is an age difference?  I grew up in a blue collar union household in the wake of the CIO and the World War.  My parents, my neighbors, their coworkers were all union people.  Every election, they'd be involved on the edges of Democratic politics at the grass roots.  

That's a very different situation than what you're discussing today.
