I'm not sure what sort of a progressive and liberal base the Democratic Party has.  The coherence and focus that was there in LBJ's day has long dissolved and what's left seems to be simply people making sales pitches for an image to diverse customers.

Race plays a different and much more complex role in this than many people seem to think.  A look at how the Republicans choreographed their conventions to present black and hispanic faces was part of this.  The purpose was not to appeal to "minority voters" but to white conservatives who didn't want to seem overtly racist.
