Communist Wins Cyprus Elections

NICOSIA, February 24.— Communist Party (AKEL) leader Dimitris Christofias
won the runoff election Sunday in the Cyprus presidential election,
according to official results reported by Prensa Latina.

With 98 percent of the ballots tallied, Christofias, who held the post of
parliament chairman, received 53.4 percent to 46.5 for European Parliament
MP Ioannis Kassoulides.

Nearly a half million voters were eligible including for the first time some
400 Turkish Cypriots, who reside on the south of the island.

After voting, Christofias offered a friendly message to the Turkish Cypriot
community of the north in which he called on them to work together for a
reunified country and deal with their issues without foreign intervention.

Cyprus was divided in 1974 after the invasion of the Turkish Army that
occupied the north to avoid its annexation to Greece.
