Responding to Anthony's questions:
I don't know what the Catholic Church is doing. Probably not much, since its
stock has gone way down, especially in S. Calif, as a result of the scandal
about priests molesting children.
The most prominent Latino Democrats have endorsed Hillary. However, since
Obama became viable with the Iowa caucuses, there has been a rush to endorse
him among second and third tier figures. Obama has been steadily narrowing
the gap with Hillary in both California and nationwide polls, which has
bolstered the confidence in his campaign, and brought him a growing number
of "superdelegates" (see below).
Bill Richardson isn't endorsing anyone at the moment, and neither is John
Edwards. Both of those withdrawals are seen as a mixed blessing for Obama.
On the one hand, polls that go back and ask the same people their evolving
views, as well as tracking polls, suggest most of the Richardson/Edwards
supporters are going with Obama. But at the same time, the existence of a
second tier of candidates kept the race more fluid. It is one thing to
finish second in a field of four or five. It is another to finish second in
a field of two.
