Paraguayan Workers to Strike for Lugo
Asuncion, Jan 31 (Prensa Latina) About 100,000 Paraguayan workers will go on
an indefinite strike if the presidential candidacy of former Bishop Fernando
Lugo is challenged, union leaders announced.
Secretary General of the CNT (National Workers Confederation), Juan Torales,
announced a general strike of the working sector to defend the leader of the
Patriotic Alliance for Change in case the Electoral Justice decides to
impugn him.
Torales, who is also coordinator of the multi-union BSP (Social, Popular
Bloc), said that if necessary, Paraguayan workers will join farmer movements
in their radicalization of measures against governing Colorado Party.
He said about 100,000 would be mobilized by the CNT and other unions
belonging to BSP.
In a statement on Wednesday, the BSP leadership said they won't permit any
violation against Lugo as it would be disappointing fir the Paraguayan
people who long for change.
Lugo and his running mate Federico Franco registered their candidacies
before the Superior Court of Electoral Justice on Thursday, accompanied by a
crowd of followers who marched throughout Asuncion.
Also today, the Electoral Justice announced that the electoral roll is ready
for presidential polls of April 20, with over 2.89 million voters
registered.
