But this is not solely a question of the "rationality" of international
capitalism and the competing components of its makeup.
If Russia cuts gas deliveries to the Ukraine, and the Ukraine then either
destroys pipelines, or halts transshipment to Western Europe, to the economy
of Germany which has already experience its sharpest drop in manufacturing
orders in 15 years; if it halts deliveries to the Eurozone countries who
have just seen, collectively, export orders fall by 7% in June, what then?
Where will the bourgeoisie begin to apply pressure, including economic
retaliation and military pressure-- against the Ukraine? I bet not.
Once capitalism hits the downside of its peak and trough economy, and
devaluation, debasement, destruction of assets is its order of the day, the
most enlightened bankers, diplomats, generals cannot control the cascade of
events. At a certain point "blowback" goes global. I hope this isn't the
point.
I wish I could say that this will all serve to drive back up the price of
oil-- and no more. I can't.
