If supply and demand explains everything than they explain nothing. Or, as Marx
said supply and demand are the surface appearance which masks the underlying
means to overcome the contradictions of capitalism. Whether or not speculation
in the commodities markets falls under supply and demand tells us nothing about
what it does and how it impacts profits, nor does it allow for an unmasking of
the mechanisms behind the rise in commodity prices. Supply and demand as an
explanation of the rise in oil prices masks the underlying mechanisms and the
contradiction they are mediating.
