There is continual confusion over what is the _purpose_ of class
analysis. Mainstream socioiogists establish "classes" as a way of
identifying the individuals who belong to that class. When some version
of that purpose is (knowingly or unknowingly) adopted by marxists, what
they produce is not class politics but identity politics -- they focus
on describing what goes into a "working-class identity." A pointless
exercise at best; at worst it becomes a barrier to concrete political
analysis within a given historical context.
