The whole premise of his trip was based on reaching a non-Christian land.
This was important for several reasons: 1) his "compensation package"
depended on it, 2) the "international public law" of the time and the papal
bull which conceded the right to annex the land to Spain was premised on it 
being a land of heathens. It can be argued that the legalistic arguments 
wouldn't have made a significant change, but I think that is undervaluing 
the existing ideological structure of the time. Consider how the School of 
Salamanca worked quite diligently in finding proper annexation titles beyond 
the papal bull, and found some of them actually spureous, for instance the 
"they're wild savages and don't know what to do with their lives" one.
