To the  Editor:
 
 At first, I thought that Steven Erlanger's one-sided article, In  Gaza, 
Hamas' Insults to Jews Complicate Peace, dated April 1 was a perverse  April 
Fool's prank, but then again, being a regular reader, I realized that this  was 
part of the Times' continuing effort to demonize Hamas and the Palestinian  cause.
 
 Why no  mention of the noxious racism in Israeli school textbooks, the 
alarming increase  of anti-Arab bigotry as shown in many opinion polls, and the 
growing popularity  among Israelis of the slogan, "Death to the Arabs"? 
Particularly egregious and  insulting to those who can follow this subject with a 
modicum of open-mindedness  was the following, "no matter what Israeli and 
Palestinian negotiators agree  upon, there is concern here that the attitudes being 
instilled will make a  sustainable peace extremely difficult." So Palestinian 
attitudes  are the obstacle to peace? No mention of a history of ethnic 
cleansing,  "targeted assassinations", collective punishment, home demolitions, four 
decades  of occupation, illegal settlements, Jewish-only roads, over five 
hundred  checkpoints and an internationally condemned Wall. As long as Israel 
places an  equal sign between it and Jews, and no significant sector of Jewry 
objects, is  it so shocking that Palestinians should start to also accept this  
claim?
