Like Lou I found Buddhism through Jack Kerouac, in my
case supplemented by Alan Watts and a Thai
refrigerator repairman who lived in Berkeley. The Thai
guy explained the utility of his brand of Buddhism,
particularly his brand of meditation to class
struggle.

With practice you should be able to meditate and
achieve serenity even in the middle of a crisis in a
hospital emergency room. (At the time I worked in a
hospital.)Or, if you happen to be a soldier, in the
midst of a fire fight.

In other words, Thai guy buddhism does not mean you
can not, should not, or do not participate in the
struggle, it just means that you float above it while
you participate. It just takes practice. Meditation is
also good for child birth.
