I sure hope Walter is right.
A lot of us were just a little too young for the civil rights movement. By
the time I was around, my presence and help weren't wanted. I attended some
sit-ins, but my ass wasn't wanted on the pavement. I went to some of these
because, at the very least, my eyes provided one more potential witness to
discourage any brutalization by the police.
Katrina has certainly contributed much to this kind of ferment, and it seems
to have gotten the focus over the touchy-feely abstractions back to the
institutions of power. Insofar as it's happened, the convergence of black
power with the Greens reflects this, and does the promising emergence of
things like the Reconstruction Party.
I can only say in this community that the NAACP is a dynamic place to be,
lots of younger people, and a real militant and combative spirit.
