recommending mutt and thunderbird is fine, but some list members will
be posting from a locked-down machine that doesn't permit them to
install applications at will.  some workplaces even block SSH.
perhaps a standardised, recommended web-based email client would be in
order?  gmail seems more or less ok as long as you tun off base-64
encoding.
