This is exactly why nuclear power is such an awful option. The dangers--
particulate pollution and global heating--are real and present. Nuclear
power is possibly (probability unknow) a major nonpolluting energy
source *starting a decade in the future* and draining enormous
investment resources during that intervening decade. Meanwhile,
however, how many people die everyday in China because of coal and
it's insane rate of growth? *How many will die because the resources
needed
to replace coal by nonpolluting energy-sources right now are diverted
to investments in nuclear power that will pay off, in'ch'allah, a decade
or more in the future?*
I disagree with Louis's seeming belief that socialists should not
"be interested" in proposing concrete solutions to pressing social
problems, even solutions that point beyond liberal capitalism to
collectivist governmental action. That is why I maintain that
socialists--everywhere--should propose and support truly massive
public investment for the distributed installation of solar and aeolian
electricity-generation faciities, the development of large wind-powered
plants to capture hydrogen through electrolysis, and the formation of
a distribution network to provide everywhere the hydrogen necessary
to replace all internal-combustion and jet engines (phasing out
airplanes in favor of airships) with fuel-cell powered personal and
collective vehicles.
