Caracas, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) Latin American and Caribbean left-wing
parties and movements were called upon today by Venezuelan president, Hugo
Chavez, to meet in 2008 to form an international organization.
Talking before thousands of aspirants to join the Venezuelan United
Socialist Party (PSUV), Chavez explained that he had recently talked of the
possibility with the presidents of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, of Bolivia, Evo
Morales and other leaders.
He said that 2008 "could be a very good year to call a meeting of left-wing
parties and organize a sort of international, an organization of left-wing
parties and movements in Latin America and the Caribbean".
Chavez attributed a very active role to the PSUV in the international sphere
in the context of a resurgence of left wing movements and parties in Asia,
Europe, the United States and Canada.
"There is a resurgence of consciousness among the peoples and on this basis
movements, leaders, leaderships of a new left, of a new project, should
continue to grow," he added.
The statesman recalled that more than five million Venezuelans registered as
aspirants to militants of the PSUV and18 thousand battalions (grass roots
organization) with 1.5 million regular participants in their meetings.
He explained that from the beginning he thought it was sufficient to create
a party with two million members, active and disciplined, that would be the
largest party in the history of Venezuela and Latin America.
At the meeting, Chavez asked the aspirants for PSUV militants to create an
offensive to assure approval of the constitutional reform project in the
referendum aimed at guaranteeing socialism in that South American nation.
