There's another dimension here worth exploring. There are a number of 
European nations that either never got involved with colonialism or if 
they did only on the most minuscule level. Nor do they seem guilty of 
multinational corporation domineering of the sort that Great Britain and 
the USA are associated with. I speak of East India Company, Chase 
Manhattan, etc. The Scandinavian countries come to mind as exemplars of 
"non-colonial" behavior. But that doesn't take into account the way in 
which Sweden et al derive benefits from the more explicit rapacious 
behavior of Anglo-American imperialism. Without the US military, Saab 
might not have the same kind of opportunities. Can't we say the same 
thing about China? It is moving into Africa in a big way, but the 
countries that are the "beneficiaries" of its investments in oil, 
copper, etc. are weakened by decades of IMF and World Bank intervention.
