Racism is alive and well, first and foremost because it is an innate feature
of institutions in capitalist America. Subjective racial attitudes have
changed radically in the last fifty years, but without making a serious dent
in segregated housing patterns, unemployment, incarceration, etc. In some
respect, it's gotten considerably worse.

We have, of course, invented and reinvented new ways of describing racism in
such ways as to diffuse discontent with the system. Not surprisingly, the
Left tail is being wagged by faddism in the academic institutions that exist
to deflect serious radicalism into harmless channels.

My advice is to spend less time on labels and more on the substance.

I heartily second Steffie's recommendations, and would add some others.
Peter Camejo's book is worth a look because he's asking the right questions.
Foner also put together a directory of black officeholders in the
Reconstruction, _Freedom's Lawmakers_. I suspect that there's a great deal
of solid work to be done on black self-organization in those years.

Solidarity!
