I wonder how many black people in the US have the choice of "not thinking
of themselves as black"? -- for example if one didn't think of oneself as 
black in certain situations, and act accordingly, one can quite conceivably get
beaten up, or worse, by the police.

Ironically Walter's comment just exposes again what an important factor
white privilege is -- since it is the privilege of the white person to claim to   
be colour blind or not to think of himself as "white", where the black
person has to be conscious of her colour all day long -- probably even
when she's asleep.
