Tariq Ali said a number of interesting things, but they were written
before the attack on the Red Mosque. He did not say anything against
the impending attack, which was prepared for several days, nor since.
Tariq Ali is not a shy person. He speaks out when he wants to speak.

This does not mean he supports the attack, but we haven't seen him as
yet speak out against the attack, or the use of such methods to deal
with such problems. I'm sure that he will speak out against it, too.
He is Pakistani and, though he lives in the UK, he remains concerned
with and involved with the politics of his birth country today.

So far, all that I have yet seen opposing the Musharraf government's
assault on the Red Mosque was by the Communist Party of Pakistan but
I hope others have spoken out. It's the same variety of thing as took
place at Waco, in the MOVE massacre, and at Attica, where the central
thing was the capitalist government giving a demonstration to the
local and international community as to who has the monopoly on the
use of violence in that society: the government.

means, I've just scanned and posted, I'm pretty sure for the first
time anywhere, Joseph Hansen's 1968 discussion of Fidel Castro's
"endorsement" of the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia.

CPP STRONGLY CONDEMNED MILITARY OPERATION AT LAL MASJID AND JAMIA HAFSA.

(ISLAMABAD – 10TH JULY 2007) Communist Party of Pakistan (CPP) in a
very strong word condemned and criticized the military operation done
by General Pervaz Musharraf at Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa.

This was briefly stated in a policy statement by the Chairman of CPP,
Engineer Jameel Ahmad Malik here today.

CPP being a secular party is against the fundamentalist religious
elements but the way the religious scholars, women and children were
brutally killed and murdered at Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa by the
Army is really very deplorable and the Communist Party strongly
protest on this action of Army and Musharraf.

Engineer Jameel vehemently said and stressed that he is too much
grieved on so many deaths and causality and have sympathy for all who
died.

He requested Supreme Court of Pakistan to take notice of all these
deaths and a high powered Judicial Inquiry be appointed in this
context.
