We get news stories like this periodically. I think the boomers were the
first generation to do worse than their parents. The big boom in terms of
the American standard of living was post-war and in the 1950s. Around the
time we were getting out of college in the later 1960s and 1970s, the
economy had clearly turned.
Notwithstanding the selective anecdotal evidence, most of us wound up taking
a serious slip down the social ladder in terms of income. My grade-school
educated blue collar parents were certainly much more financially successful
in the 1950s than I was able to be with a college degree twenty years later
and certainly much better than I was able to do with graduate degrees.
