My entire life. Specifically, my political experiences in Chicago,
starting with the anti-war movement and all of it's sects and splits
and coalitions, but primarily with the CCAWR. Continuing thru
electoral work at a ward level for "independent democrats" and most
recently with the Green Party.

Over and over I saw ideological relations between people identified
with factions or ideological groupings, undermine social relations and
political unity. The WWP/PSL split, the CCAWR/CAWI split, the
formation and subsequent dissolution of various activist groupings in
the anti-war movement which become little more than gossip clubs with
occasional ceremony of dedication.

The analysis is drawn from my discussions and meetings with all of the
people I met during that time ranging from Democratic Party die-hards
to Party for Socialism and Liberation leaders, anti-police violence
and community activists, public health workers, life-long election
organizers, architecture grad students, nurses, born-again christians,
the corner grocer, childhood friends, even my family.

It's roots are in my understanding of Marx and Science, specifically
the priority of social and economic relations. Priority meaning both
that they are the most important, as I cannot eat an idea -- and also
that changes and formations there, preceed changes and formations in
ideology.
