Re: Avakian and Trotsky...

After Mao's death, the RCP went through a major [60-40%] split over whether to
continue to support the Chinese CP under the emerging Deng Xiaoping leadership, or
denounce them as anti-Mao. [The Spartacist League gloated in a headline, "The
Maoists united will never be repeated."]

The majority, led by Avakian, defended the Gang of Four - the surviving
beneficiaries of the leadership upheaval during the Cultural Revolution, targeted
as the architects of the great disorder of the 60s. Today, the RCP mimics the
hysterical Mao cult of the Chairman's final years, in an attempt to maintain an
ideological link to that period.

The mid-70s split produced a pamphlet that featured some biting cartoons depicting
Avakian as an ultra-left martinet, echoing the caricatures of Jiang Qing & co. that
flooded China in the post-Mao period, when the old party leadership retook command.

There was no deeper insult in the RCP than to be called a Trot.
