Major League Baseball's attempt to "clean up" its tarnished image has been
seen by the public as pathetic and hypocritical. Anyone who has been watching
the game before the mid 1990s had to be struck by the appearance of cartoonish
sized physiques of the players. Overnight it seemed, wrestler and
football-sized players were playing baseball and everyone was hitting long home runs.
Human beings, even athletes in their twenties and thirties can't gain all that
muscle in four months.

The owners knew from experience - the 1919 "Black Sox Scandal" - that the
best way to revive the game was to give the advantage to the offense - more home
runs! That meant tighter-sewn balls, harder wood bats, shorter outfield
dimensions - and the wink and the nod to steroid use. Apparently, showing up at
spring training camp 20 pounds heavier with severe acne and dramatic mood
swings wasn't enough to tip off these brilliant captains of industry and their
managers/general managers and team physicians. The big bucks were rolling in,
so "see no evil, ..."

Now that the fans are sick of this farce and the dangerous effect it has had
upon impressionable teenage athletes, the owners are like the corrupt pro
Vichy police lieutenant in the film Casablanca - "we're shocked, shocked to
find out that performance enhancing drugs have been used to distort hitting
records!" !!!

None of those outed players had the chance to confront their accuser. Will
they get that chance? Were the accusations made under oath? Why are there no
names of compliant owners and their associates?
