"Sartesian", on a private mail, has corrected a typo by yours truly,
for which I thank him. And later on his private mail he has gone
somehow further on more slippery ground. Perhaps both issues might be
of interest for Marxmailers. So that let´s go by parts, like Jack the
Ripper.
A) Vargas was defeated in 1945, returned to power in 1950 (that´s my
typo) and committed suicide in 1954. This suicide strengthened the
nationalist wing of the military and in general it strengthened the
will of the Brazilian people against the gorilla (civilian and
military) pressure to put an end to Varguism. This suicide postponed
until 1964 the military coup in Brazil.
B) I have no faith in the military as such, as Sartesian further seems
to suggest. I only say that if the military are prevented from
becoming the political party of the imperialists, then there is room
for political action which will correct any -and there have been quite
a lot- mistakes on our side. The central issue is to keep the national
state and its most obvious expression, the gunpoint, in the hands of
the nation not in the hands of the enemies of the nation. My faith is
by no means placed on the military, it is placed on popular
mobilisation. But I am sure that anybody will accept that it is easier
to fight when the gunpoint is aiming at an enemy outside your own
frontiers.
