This is the whole point. We are not really interested in persuading
rank-and-filers in the DP to leave. We are much more interested in
building our party that can serve as a pole of attraction. I was
skeptical about the Greens until I attended a nearly SRO rally for
Ralph Nader at Felt Forum during the 2000 campaign. I was really
impressed by the enthusiasm of the crowd, its youth and the militancy
of Nader's speech. The success of the Greens of course was its
undoing. The DP was intent on killing it, while the fifth column
inside it was determined to neuter it. I am absolutely convinced that
the mounting contradictions of American society will produce the
objective conditions that will make a third party possible. It is
just a matter of time.
