Five Venezuelan Presidential Candidates
Resign to Support Chavez

CARACAS, October .— The Venezuelan electoral scene changed today, after it
was made public that five of the candidates for the presidency in the
December elections had withdrawn from the race.

Angel Blanco (Mision Venezuela), and Enoes Sanchez as well as Abaddes
Vazquez (Union Nacional de Organizaciones Sociales Independientes) made
their decision and communicated it to the National Electoral Council (CNE)

The list of the candidates that decided to withdraw from the race was
completed by Jose Chavez (Partido Accion Social Revolucionaria) and Lourdes
Santander, cutting the number of presidential hopefuls down to fifteen.

Jose Albornoz, secretary general of the Partido Patria para Todos (PPT), (
Homeland for All political party ) highlighted that the aforementioned
candidates will be backing the efforts for the re-election of Hugo Chavez,
the President of the Republic, an action that will strengthen the Bloque de
Cambio political group.

After this step, the political scenario shows four women and eleven men in
the race for the presidency in Venezuela. According to the polls, Chavez is
the favorite to win.

For analysts following the electoral process, in the 43 days left before the
elections, new adjustments to the number of candidates are a possibility.
There are even some versions indicating that Manuel Rosales, the main figure
for the opposition, may also withdraw , a move that Chavez has warned maybe
a maneuver designed to later question the election results.
