Hi Gary,

I watched the 10pm BBC 1 news last night and too was struck by a
different tone. It was the closest thing I've seen to despair on that
news service. It did give the sense of being finally worn down by the
horror thats been unleashed in Iraq - that its run out of control. I
think too we have too see this latest attack on the veil here as part of
the same phenomenon - its clearly going in a far right direction with
crazed calls for sacking muslim teachers, spying on "asian looking"
students and the Tory Davis talking about forcibly excluding those who
don't want to conform to "our" norms. The combination of Lancet report
and Dannatt speaking his mind, and lame duck Blair has opened up the
cracks at the top.
