The full significance of these figures has yet to be appreciated. The death rate doubles each year,
and the US has stated that it intends to remain in Iraq until 2010. At the current rate of acceleration
the full number of deaths in Iraq would be approximately 10 million by that point. This extreme scenario
is based on present trends persisting (ie, the full development of a civil war, US repression further
increased, and the resistance to the occupation intensifying). It would have destroyed over a third of
the population, which would be genocidal in scale, and roughly equivalent to the proportion of the
population killed in East Timor. That's what we're talking about here.
