The older I get, the less I understand why we assume Nazi atrocities are particularly bad.

Then let me remind you: fascists not only brutally repress those in other countries, but also brutally repress those in their own countries.  Fascists feed off constant warfare.  When something approximating democracy prevails under capitalism, there is more room to maneuver and conditions improve.  Fascism dispenses with democracy - although it might keep some of its trappings - with obvious consequences.  Of course capitalism should be replaced by socialism, but that doesn't mean socialists lose their heads and fail to act to prevent authoritarians from coming to power.  You don't shoot yourself in the head because the left isn't in a position to be successful in politics.  Andrew
