Does anyone know of a 1921 biography of KM by a German sociologist,
Ferdinand Toennies (my great grandfather)? I'd once seen an english
translation of this work, but can't recall its quality and biases.
Hi Patrick,
Your great grandfather certainly knew Marx's economic writings very
well. He faults Marx's labor theory of value for ruling out the
entrepreneurial contribution to surplus value formation.
I remember his historical analysis of the emergence of capitalism as
stimulating; he rethinks the importance of merchant capital.
I haven't unpacked my books, so I can't consult my copy.
To the excellent recommendations of Marx biographies, I would add Max
Beer's, and I would recommend Marx Wartofsky's critique of
Kolakowski's study.
Rakesh
