[Marxism] [league-discuss] education and poverty

Recently the NYT reported that students were entering community college  
unprepared to do college work. Moreover, urban public school students are often  
virtually illiterate. Some of us plan to write about why this occurs. Here is a 
 partial, unordered list/outline of some relevant issues . 
 
Ideas
-what’s wrong and why? The problem is the millions of students  failing to 
become educated. Official explanations blame combinations of  students, parents, 
teachers and schools. Rationalizations and ‘edu-babel’  abound. “It ain’t 
my fault, boss.” We agree. Neither teachers, students, parents  nor education  
administrators can make the education system work. We  applaud their efforts 
to do what they can to improve education delivery but  their efforts are 
constrained by the system within which they work.

-why the Cuban success?
- education as a promise - the  route away from poverty. The lie. The 
failure. And the need.  
-education as a means to know the world - path to culture. A lifelong  
process.
-being fully cultured/educated involves  contribution to  society.. Expose 
the one dimensional reduction of education to job  training.
-education is a social endeavor, not a social isolate.  
-To expose how the education system actually works, we must expose and  
analyze the interconnection between it and its social environment. We will see a  
diverse set of connections among  distinct groups of students which  accounts 
for how learning takes place.
-How to educate, to have a cultured,  educated population?.
-What’s the next step as well as the  solution..
-dialectics is the science of interconnection. Analyze the  interconnection 
among class, income and education.
