Humans' original breakthrough at the beginning of the species as that
custom, culture , tradition , ancestor "worship"/kinship allowed a
living generation to significantly share the experiences of dead
generations to the living generation's... advantage and convenience in
many ways. The notion is in Isaac Newton's statement that he stood on
the shoulders of giants
Perhaps some of the rational and emotional kernel of religion is in this.
But religion just gets a bit carried away, such that in some ways "the
tradition of all the dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the
brain of the living."
