Tony,

I came of age in that era and experienced the time as one that was
liberating and wonderful.  However, I have recently explored the
possibility that it, and my experience of it, was contrived.  Here's a
link to a very lengthy exploration of the Laurel Canyon phenomenon
which birthed such notables as Frank Zappa, Jim Morrison and Charles
Manson.  I read this series in its entirety months ago, so the details
have faded, but what I do recall is that (almost) all these musical
geniuses of the era that gathered around Laurel Canyon had parents in
the military.  Jim Morrison's father was the admiral in the Gulf of
Tonkin.  There's lots to ponder in these essays, interesting
especially to those of us who lived through this era.

With regard to Fidel, I find it interesting that he has been so
controversial and vocal lately, first about the possibility of nuclear
war with Iran and now, making public what has been an underground
discussion on exclusively 'conspiracy' sites.  I don't think we can
love Fidel and admire him as a revolutionary while at the same time,
dismiss his reflectiones on conspiracies.  And he is anything but
naive.  IMHO, he is alerting us to a truth he has known about for some
time, but it is only now, with the internet and the explosion of
conspiracy sites, that he can vocalize his thoughts and find a
receptive audience.  Because he is no longer an official head of
state, he can say things that he could not previously.
