Musharraf calls security council meet before key 'announcement'

Islamabad : Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, who said he would
make an "important announcement in one week", has convened a meeting
of the National Security Council Monday to take stock of the political
and security situation.

Issues relating to the current political scenario, law and order,
Talibanisation in the tribal areas, the judicial crisis and the floods
in the country are likely to be on the agenda, Daily Times said
Saturday.

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, chief ministers of all four provinces,
chiefs of armed forces, Senate chairman Muhammadmian Soomro, National
Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain and National Security Council
Secretary General Tariq Aziz are scheduled to attend the meeting,
which will be chaired by the president.

On Friday, Musharraf had told a media workshop that he would address
the nation and make "an important announcement in one week". He,
however, did not elaborate.

The general elections promised by Musharraf later this year, his own
bid for a second presidential term, his behind-the-scene talks with
some political parties and the nationwide agitation sparked by his
suspension of chief justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry are some issues
that have sparked off intense debate in Pakistan's political circles
in recent weeks.
