MST Communication/Comunicação do Congresso do MSTTom Baker here freinds and don't mean to overload you But here is from MST
in Brazil, hosting a national conference there.
We have to keep in mind what are the political forces playing there and
why isn't Lula a Chavez. Well, my thought is that the oligarchy has more
power there and they have Lula either boxed in or caved in.
Nevertheless, the popular movement which put Lula on top continues
their struggle. Important component is the MST.

Today the Fifth National Congress of the Brazilian Movement of the Landless Rural Workers (MST) began. Rural workers arrived throughout the day to the Nilson Nelson Gymnasium, in Brasília, and constructed tents, communal kitchens and bathrooms. It is expected that this historic congress will have 18,000 participants.

The objective of the Congress is to commemorate the conquests realized in the 23 years since the movement began, and also to pressure the Lula Government to implement an agrarian reform. According to Maria Elena ao Seraphim, 62, from the state of Alagoas, who has been in the MST for nine years, "I am here to pressure for the promises that Lula made and did not keep."

According to Jurelina Ramos da Silva, who has been encamped for 10 years in the state of Minas Gerais, "We are in this struggle non-stop. It is still very difficult. We want Lula to make settlements and agrarian reform."

For other people, even though they recognize there still exists much to do in the struggle for agrarian reform, there are various victories that should be commemorated, for example, the fact that 350.000 families have won title to land. Education is also considered a large victory of the movement. Access to education for every sem-terra is a central strategy of the movement. "Everyone studying is a conquest of consciousness," says Simone Aparecida Rezende, 23, from the state of Paraná, who entered the MST with her parents 8 years ago. She cites the MST schools, partnerships with federal universities and the struggle for public policies that support education in rural areas.

Rezende also emphasizes the adoption of principles of agroecology by the MST as a major triumph. She says that agroecology offers a method of production for campesinos to liberate themselves from multinational corporations and foreign capital tied to agribusiness.

Tomorrow there will be debates about the international and national conjectures. On Thursday there will be a large march to the Three Powers Square, and the US embassy.
