Ukranian Communist leader demands referendum on
membership in NATO

The leader of Ukraine's Communist Party, Pyotr
Simonenko, has demanded that President Victor Yushenko
announced a referendum on the country's membership in
NATO and giving Russian the status of the second
official language.

The Central Electoral Commission submitted the
necessary documents and confirmed the signatures of 4
million residents several months ago, said Simonenko.

According to opinion polls, the overwhelming majority
of residents in the country oppose joining NATO and
support giving Russian language official status.
