Spanish Military Unrest Continues
By Foreign News Desk

The dismissal of Spanish General Jose Mena Aguado from
his position for openly favoring “a coup,” and Colonel
Fernando Abalo, arrested for a similar reason, could
not help to ease the coup dispute within the army.

Tensions mounted once again over a statement made by a
captain, an admirer of former Spanish dictator Franco,
that the army is clouded with an atmosphere of
uneasiness.

Captain Roberto Gonzalez Calderon, head of a military
association set up to defend the Franco thoughts, said
that there is a very predominant atmosphere of
uneasiness across the country for social and political
reasons.

The Spanish Armed Forces are disturbed by this
atmosphere of anxiety over the country’s social and
political prospects, said Capt. Gonzalez, who vowed to
be an upstanding member of the army against the
Defense Ministry if the necessary precautions are not
taken promptly.

Spanish newspaper Melilla Hoy published a letter from
Calderon in Melilla, part of Morocco under Spanish
sovereignty. The letter argued that Spain was on the
verge of becoming fragmented and urged by the news
report, General Staff officials informed the Defense
Ministry that Mr. Calderon would be punished in
accordance with the regulations of the Spanish army.

Gen. Aguado, the Land Forces’ second in command,
objected to the new autonomous status that the
Catalonia autonomous Administration submitted to the
Spanish Parliament for approval, and was dismissed
when he threatened a possible military coup.

Col. Abalo was also arrested when he criticized Mena
for backing down from his previous statement.

Capt. Calderon will be the third military officer to
be penalized for attempting to incite a coup.
