Left warns of withdrawal of support if government
continues military alliance with US

New Delhi - The Communist Party of India (Marxist)
CPI(M) today warned the support of Left parties to the
Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA)
government would end if it continued efforts at
becoming a strategic partner of the US.

Vowing to oppose any military alliance between India
and the US, the CPI(M) said, "It is unfortunate that
like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National
Democratic Alliance (NDA), the UPA is also trying to
become a strategic partner of the US and becoming
subservient to it in foreign policy and economic
issues. If the UPA does not move away from this path,
the support of the Left parties would end," senior CPI
(M) leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev
Bhattacharjee said here.

After the last Lok Sabha elections the options were
limited, he said.

"Either Vajpayee would become prime minister or
Manmohan. We were urged to join the UPA government at
the Centre. We did not do so as we had fundamental
differences with Congress.

"But our support is not unconditional. Left parties
would oppose the move to give up the independent
foreign policy and economic self- reliance under US
pressure," he said.

On the planned visit of US President George W Bush to
India, Bhattacharjee said, "We will not tolerate any
military alliance with the US and will oppose it tooth
and nail."

Branding Bush as a "leader of organized killers in the
world," Bhattacharjee said "Bush is coming to fulfill
his political and economic aspirations...We opposed
the joint military exercise with the US as we did
during the NDA regime."

Bhattacharjee was speaking at the 40th anniversary of
the CPI(M) daily `Ganashakti' in Calcutta.

CPI(M) to oppose any military alliance with US:

GANASHAKTI ANNIVERSARY : ‘WE WILL PROTEST WHEREVER
BUSH GOES,’ SAYS BISWAS
UPA Govt can’t make US a ‘strategic partner’: CPM

Kolkata - CPI(M) leaders including Chief Minister
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today criticised the UPA
government for “hobnobbing” with the United States.
They said that the leftists will not allow the union
government to make the US a strategic partner of
India.

“The government of India is trying to be a strategic
partner of the US. But we will not allow any agreement
that will go against the interests of the country,”
said the Chief Minister while addressing a gathering
of his partymen to celebrate the 40th anniversary of
the party‘s mouthpiece Ganashakti.

The Chief Minister was critical on the issue of
Indo-US relations. He described the US president
George Bush as the “leader of the world‘s most
organised killer group”. “He will visit India very
soon to explore the scopes of the US in India in
political, economic and strategic areas. The US needs
a base country in South Asia to combat China,” said
Bhattacharjee.

At the same function party, state secretary Anil
Biswas said, “We have learnt that George Bush will
visit India within two months. We do not know what his
plans are. The centre will have discussions with the
US president which will remain absolutely secret.
However, we will put up demonstrations wherever Bush
will go.”

The two leaders of the party discussed many
present-day concerns that are going to be key issues
in the forthcoming assembly polls.

The leaders hinted that the party’s campaign for the
election will be based on the agricultural
developments that have resulted from the rule of the
Left Front government in the state, will also
highlight future plans for the industrialisation of
the state.

Left parties to protest Bush's forthcoming visit to
India

New Delhi - India's Left parties have decided to
organize campaigns across the country during the
forthcoming visit of US President George Bush to
protest the "hegemonistic" policies of Washington.

"We decided to organize widespread campaign against
the US policies in connection with President Bush's
visit to India. The campaign will culminate in big
protest actions during his visit," Left leaders
Prakash Karat and A B Bardhan told reporters after a
joint meeting of the CPI(M), CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc
here today.

"Everywhere he goes" was the reply of Karat when he
was asked a spate of questions on where the protests
would be held.

The parties would also campaign to pressurize the UPA
government to follow non-aligned policies and not to
succumb to "imperialist" pressure, the leaders said.
