Pentagon may keep large contingent in Iraq for long
time

NEW YORK, March 7 (Itar-Tass) -- The U.S. Department
of Defence may keep a large contingent of troops in
Iraq for a long time.

According to Pentagon officials, the idea comes from
Deputy Secretary of Defence Paul Wolfowitz, one of the
main ideologists of the war in Iraq.

It is believed that the U.S. contingent should be as
large as were the U.S. occupation forces in Europe and
Asia after World War II.

The Boston Globe reports that the United States would
like to use the same scenario to Iraq as was used in
Germany and Japan more than 50 years ago.

The newspaper believes this means that the U.S. is not
interested in a fast restoration of the Iraqi army. If
the Iraqi army strengthens to the point where it can
resist external threats, the Iraqis may be tempted to
ask the U.S. troops to leave, which may lead to
instability, one of the Department of Defence
consultants said.

At the same time, the report prepared by Wolfowitz
calls for strengthening police and other internal
security services in Iraq.

EXPLOSION ROCKS U.S. HEADQUARTERS IN IRAQ

(Baghdad, Iraq-AP) -- At least ten rockets and a car
bomb have exploded in Baghdad.

Smoke and flames can be seen near the area known as
the "Green Zone," which houses the headquarters of the
U.S.-led coalition.

There's no word yet on casualties from the rocket
attacks, but Iraqi police say there are no casualties
from the car bomb. It exploded outside the former
Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A
U.S. military mess hall is behind that building.

The last attack on the Green Zone was four days ago,
when a rocket hit the area. No one was injured and no
damage was reported.

Sunday with Iraq 's top Shiite cleric to resolve a
dispute that held up the signing of the interim
constitution. In Washington, American officials said a

investigators and support staff will go to Iraq to
assemble war crimes cases against Saddam Hussein and

Attack injures four British soldiers in Iraq

Four British soldiers have been injured when they came
under attack while patrolling a village in south-east
Iraq.

"We can confirm that UK patrols came under fire while
patrolling the village of Qal at Sahil in the Maysan
province," a ministry spokesman said.

"The patrol returned fire after receiving fire from
heavy machineguns and a rocket-propelled grenade," the
spokesman said, adding the injured soldiers were from
the Second Light Infantry.

The four soldiers, whom the spokesman declined to
identify, were admitted to the Shaibah military
hospital near Basra where they were being treated for
"non-life-threatening injuries", the spokesman said.

The British sector in the south-east corner of Iraq
has been relatively quiet for the past few months.

In June 2003, six British military policemen were
killed in an attack in Majar al-Kabir.

US soldier killed in Kuwait accident

KUWAIT CITY: A US soldier was killed and three others
injured Friday when the mini-bus they were riding in
overturned after it was hit by a vehicle, a US
military official said.

According to Captain Douglas Duecker, spokesman for US
forces in Kuwait, the four US soldiers were riding in
a mini-bus when another vehicle, carrying two
foreigners, struck it from behind and caused the
mini-bus to roll over.

The soldiers were transported to a Kuwaiti military
hospital, where one soldier was dead on arrival and
the other three were in stable condition, he said.

The accident occurred at 5:00 am (0200 GMT) near the
Kuwait Naval Base, located nearly 70 kilometers (43
miles) south of the capital, Kuwait City, and used by
US forces.

Seoul protests seizure in Iraq of KBS TV crew

Foreign ministry officials in Seoul filed a strong
protest with U.S. officials in Baghdad yesterday after
U.S. military guards forcibly detained and handcuffed
members of a South Korean television crew who were
suspected of carrying explosives.
At a checkpoint in Iraqi capital, Jeong Chang-jun, a
reporter for KBS, and two colleagues were taken into
custody and questioned on Saturday after dogs,
specially trained to detect bomb-making material,
indicated that a KBS camera bag might contain
explosives. The television staffers reported that they
were held on a roadside with their hands tied behind
their backs and interrogated for three hours before
being released.
Mr. Jeong and his team had been reporting from Iraq
for a month.
The foreign ministry issued a formal protest through
the South Korean Embassy in Baghdad, and demanded
explanation and formal apology from the American
officials.
In an interview with the Yonhap news agency, Mr. Jeong
said, "We showed the authorities our identification,
and they knew we were journalists. But they left us
with our hands tied at the checkpoint and waited for
their shift to end before freeing us."
