One Enron associate which has not yet come under scrutiny in the acres
of press coverage of the downfall of the energy giant is lobbying firm
Citigate Westminster, which listed Enron Europe as one of its leading
clients in its February 2001 prospectus.
Citigate, like Enron, is a major Labour donor. It gave the party £16,161
last year alone. It chairman, Labour peer Lord Faulkner of Worcester, is
a longtime friend of Peter Mandelson who helped the former Northern
Ireland minister set up the shadow communications agency in the
mid-1980s, alongside advertising man turned pollster Philip Gould and
then Mirror-man Alastair Campbell.
Faulkner was a key member of Neil Kinnock's team in the 1987 and 1992
general elections and more recently has sat on the government's working
party on football-related disorder. Faulkner's fellow Citygate director
Rex Osborn, meanwhile, worked closely with Mandelson for several years
at Labour HQ, where he rose to become deputy director of campaigns
before leaving to become a lobbyist in 1997.
